The 2026 PGA TOUR Season by Winning Formula, So Far
Thirty-four 2026 PGA TOUR winners have a strokes-gained record in the Data Action Golf database, from the Sony Open in January through the BMW Championship in August. Here they are side by side, with the season's averages and the labels that recur.
- Completed
- August 23, 2026
This is the running ledger for the 2026 season: every winner in our database with a strokes-gained record, from the Sony Open in Hawaii in January through the BMW Championship on August 23, 2026, with the four category totals, their share of his advantage, and the winning-formula label. The database stops at the BMW Championship, so the events after it are not here yet; this page will be updated when they are, and the update date at the top will say so. Each event name links to its own article.
The same two cautions as the 2025 ledger apply with more force, because the sample is smaller and the season is not over. Thirty-four winners is enough to describe a season's tendencies and not nearly enough to prove anything about golf. Shares describe how a week's advantage was distributed, not what causes wins. The method is in how Data Action Golf reads a winner.
Every 2026 winner with a strokes-gained record, through the BMW Championship
Strokes gained are Data Golf's, summed over the winner's four rounds against the field's average. The percentage after each figure is that category's share of the winner's advantage, counting only the categories where he beat the field. Two 2026 events in the schedule have no strokes-gained record and no article: the Puerto Rico Open and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

The season in four numbers
| Category | Average strokes gained | Average share of advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Off the tee | +2.56 | 20% |
| Approach | +4.68 | 33% |
| Around the green | +1.18 | 11% |
| Putting | +5.31 | 36% |
Average winning margin: 2.0 strokes. Average bogeys per winner over 72 holes: 5.8. Seven of the 34 wins came in a playoff, and 13 of the 34 winners led or shared the lead after 54 holes, which is a lower proportion than 2025's 21 of 40. Eight winners came from three or more strokes back.
The shape of the averages is close to 2025's. Putting supplied 36% of the average winner's advantage and approach 33%, with the tee shot at 20% and around the green at 11%. Putting and approach were tied as the largest single category, 15 winners each, with off the tee (3) and around the green (1) making up the rest. The tee shot's share is a few points higher than in 2025 and around the green a few points lower, and with 34 winners that is a difference to notice rather than a finding to announce.
The range, as always, is where the interest is. The largest putting week was Wyndham Clark's +12.57 at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson, where he shot 30 under par and made 2 bogeys all week, the fewest by any winner this season. The largest approach week was Collin Morikawa's +9.67 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, 77% of his advantage from one category, the most lopsided share of the season. Off the tee ran from Chris Gotterup's +5.42 at the John Deere Classic to Akshay Bhatia's -4.36 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, where Bhatia lost more than four strokes to the field with the driver and won in a playoff on the strength of +10.6 putting. Eighteen of the 34 winners lost strokes to the field in at least one category, more than half, and eleven of those eighteen were around the green.
The winning-formula ledger
| Label | Count |
|---|---|
| Putting-Fueled Win | 12 |
| Final-Round Takeover | 9 |
| Mistake-Free Win | 5 |
| Ball-Striking Blueprint | 3 |
| Driving Domination | 2 |
| Short-Game Survival | 2 |
| Complete-Game Victory | 1 |
Putting-Fueled Win leads again, 12 of 34, a slightly higher proportion than 2025's 13 of 40. The bigger change is in second place: Final-Round Takeover, 9 of 34 against 7 of 40 last season, while Ball-Striking Blueprint fell from 11 to 3. The Blueprint rule needs the tee shot and approach together to reach 55% of the advantage with approach the larger. Several 2026 winners with big approach weeks, Russell Henley's 61% at the Charles Schwab Challenge for one, are filed as Takeovers instead because they started Sunday from well back, and the Takeover rule is checked first. So part of the swing between the two labels is a change in how leads were held, not a change in how strokes were gained. That is worth keeping in mind before anyone declares 2026 the year of the comeback.
Three winners, three ways each
Three players have three wins each in the 2026 database, and as in 2025 none of them used one formula. Chris Gotterup's three carry Short-Game Survival (Sony Open), Final-Round Takeover (WM Phoenix Open) and Final-Round Takeover again (John Deere Classic), with the driver his largest category at the Deere and the putter at Waialae. Wyndham Clark's three carry Mistake-Free Win (The CJ Cup, putting 59%), Putting-Fueled Win (U.S. Open, putting 42% with no category below +2.5) and Ball-Striking Blueprint (BMW Championship, approach 46%). Cameron Young's two carry a Takeover at The Players (approach 47%) and a Putting-Fueled Win at the Cadillac Championship (putting 49%), and Matt Fitzpatrick's two a Takeover at the Valspar Championship and the season's only Complete-Game Victory at the RBC Heritage, where every category sat between 22% and 31%.
What this ledger can and cannot say
It can describe 34 weeks of 2026 in one frame and give you a yardstick for reading the next one. It can say that losing strokes in a category was more common than not this season (18 of 34) and that most of those deficits were around the green (11). It can show that the season's label counts moved against 2025's, and it can tell you exactly why some of that movement is an artefact of rule order.
It cannot rank players, explain wins, or forecast the FedExCup Playoffs or 2027. It cannot see the two events without a strokes-gained record, and it cannot see anything after August 23, 2026 until the database is refreshed. When it is, this page changes, and the change is dated.
Better data always means better golf, and a season ledger is how a single week's number gets its context.
